Loving Without Attachment

Take A Pause Ep 30: Knowing when love causes pain
Take A Pause: Loving Without Attachment

“Love cannot cause pain. Attachments cause pain.” - Yung Pueblo

The premise of loving without attachment can be intriguing, because unless we study and practice the Dhamma, the association between “love” and “attachment” may not come up so often for us.

While we celebrate love on occasions like Valentine’s Day, let’s also investigate the quality and nature of our love.

Let us consider that our passion may not be all that healthy, our affection not entirely wholesome.

That our infatuation may be nothing more than a story in our head, and our adoration masks a desire to control.

Our generosity may be tainted with expectations, and our benevolence may, in fact, be conditional.

The happiness we feel sends us flying to the moon, and just as quickly and suddenly pulls us down into depths of despair.

With mindful awareness and wisdom, we begin to sense even the subtlest traces of attachment woven into our love.

With attachment, there will always be tension present, only because we are holding on so tightly.

Letting go of attachment creates space for lightness and ease. This is when love and being loved feels truly free.

In this Take A Pause session recorded on 19 January 2025, we brought to mind a person we loved, and contemplated if we were loving this person with any traces of attachment.

We then listened to an excerpt from Yung Pueblo’s Inward, and offered some thoughts of kindness to ourselves and the person we loved:

May I love freely without clinging or holding on…

May I offer love that is unconditional and boundless...

May you be happy, free, and loved just as you are…

May your heart always be light…
