From what you have observed, is mindfulness an absence of need/wants or just being observant with your needs/wants and responding to them?

If it’s the latter, how do we know if we are responding instead of reacting when the needs/wants urges come. You could use an example with wine. 😁

Mindfulness is not an absence of needs/wants, it is noticing the absence (and presence) of needs/wants and understanding the corresponding impact on our wellbeing. With mindfulness we learn to discern desire and see that there is attachment and craving in this desire that brings suffering. It doesn't mean we don't have desires. We can have wholesome and unwholesome desires. Alcohol has always been an unwholesome desire for me, and I see that even a trace of it can bring me a lot of suffering, and so I choose complete abstinence.
